The 1960's brought a new wave of talent—including ace pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, quiet slugger Billy Williams and effervescent third baseman Ron Santo—would ultimately prove to be the much-needed tonic to reverse the franchise’s fortune. The Cubs made a run at the postseason late in the decade, coming closest in 1969 when it folded late in a turbulent pennant race with the upstart New York Mets.
