A Crayon study of Squares done by crayon over paper with a hard stone underneath. This is an old fashioned lithograph, just working with a hard stone underneath, not a series of copies, like the modern use of the word lithograph. Therese Schwartz was an American activist writer and then artist who transitioned in her life from words to just images. Read the last picture discussing her reason for drawing squares upon squares. The deeper you look, the more underlying squares you see. Most famous for her “Art in American” study of 1960’s political activist artists, “The Politicalization of the Avant-Garde,” she increasingly became an artist herself, and stopped writing, believing images had more meaning than words. She was well known and appreciated as a fine woman artist in the mid-1960’s, but has become forgotten. Though she had important art shows in galleries worldwide and though her works remain in museums, they are in storage vaults, not displayed anymore. 19” by 24”, drawn in 1974.
